American Sign Language University (ASLU) was created by Dr. Bill Vicars, a Deaf person and an associate professor of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at California State University, Sacramento.
You can access video lessons about phrases and numbers for free. There are many other free guides and learning features, such as a fingerspelling practice tool.
ASLU also provides instructor-guided ASL courses through pre-recorded videos for more structured learning. It’s one of the best platforms for free online sign language resources.
Start ASL has developed online sign language courses using interactive activities and quizzes. Unlike a traditional school, Start ASL doesn’t impose any deadlines and lets you study at your own pace.
Instead of completing repetitive multiple-choice questions, each unit has a nice balance of vocabulary exercises, pre-recorded video lessons, and assignments equivalent to one semester of a college or high school language course. You can even discuss topics with other students via its exclusive Facebook group to get the interaction you would find in the classroom.
Gallaudet University, the only liberal arts college for Deaf students, has taught ASL to hearing, hard-of-hearing, and Deaf learners since 1864. Gallaudet University offers free online sign language classes for complete beginners and paid online courses for various levels.
These lessons include pre-recorded presentations and instructional videos on how to sign basic words and phrases. They are great for teaching you the fundamentals of sign language. If you want to continue with your lessons you can join their 8 or 15 week courses.

On Sign It! you’ll watch engaging yet educational video presentations acted out by Deaf actors and advocates. You’ll then complete short learning tasks and quizzes. You can also access tools to track your progress or monitor how well your kids are improving.
Also, thanks to its partnership with the Signing Time Foundation and the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management, Sign It! ASL’s online sign language classes are free in the United States for families who have children under 36 months old with any degree of hearing loss.
The Sign Language Center offers six levels of online sign language classes, ranging from absolute beginner to advanced. Each course runs for six weeks, with classes meeting once a week for two hours. These sessions cover a broad spectrum of ASL skills, including vocabulary, fingerspelling, non-manual signals (NMS), and the use of space and gestures. In addition, students will develop a strong grasp of ASL grammar while honing their expressive and receptive skills. It also provides an ongoing conversational course. This course uses a natural conversation approach to encourage students to practice signing socially and discuss assigned topics in ASL.
